Anyone with "reel lawn mower" experience?
Well, I am back to mowing a lawn again. Does anyone have any experience or recommendations regarding using and buying a "reel lawn mower?"

Re: Anyone with "reel lawn mower" experience?
Yep.....I have a 8 gang. You need to made sure you have the HP to pull one ( it will tear up a small tractor). Can't let your grass to high....and need to adjust the reels acouple of times a year. To knock out a large amount of grass they work great. :smokin:

I think he means motorless hand push mower. Old school....
I have one and love it. Not too much to mow in the woods anyway. I forget the brand but mine was around $150 and came with a sharpening kit. (Hand crank and some lapping compound) For those that remember them from 20-30 years ago. THey've come a long way with the gearing and are not hard to push at all. |

Re: Anyone with "reel lawn mower" experience?
No brands recommendations on this, but it's not hard to mow by reel. Problem is any stalky weeds get pushed over and won't cut. This is the origin of the "perfect lawn" battle of herbicides, etc, going back to the 20's. Odd how habits persist generations after the reason for it is gone.
Also the wheels are wider than the mow, so you cannot get within 4" of the edge of anything. Not insurmountable, but you might forget how much you use the rotary-type as a mulcher, weed-killer and edger. I recommend, good exercise, more pleasant because of less noise. I also recommend smaller lawn. How about planting a rough in a further places, or low bushes, garden, etc. Lawns are good to contain mosquitos, and make a nice visible space by the house, but other than that are sort of a social convention. Re: Anyone with "reel lawn mower" experience?
A goat is an excellent "real" lawn mower. It is powered by the grass that it eats, will consume weeds, and can survive a prolonged period of fuel shortage. You can eat it too!
Mannish water (Goat Soup) and curry goat is popular in Jamaica. Click Here For thousands of years, goats have been used for their milk, meat, hair, and skins all over the world. Wikipedia Modern reel mowers are easy to push... Click Here (again, immune to fuel shortage, and power cuts, excepting the "electric" ones... is that cheating?) How To Select your Lawn Mower Guide to choosing and using a lawnmower Just one thing... if the S hits the F, you might not have lawnmowers at the top of your agenda... |

I found St Augustine fine with that kind of mower, but bermuda grass a reel struggle.

Re: Anyone with "reel lawn mower" experience?
I'd look for one at an auction or yard sale if I didn't have to have it right away. I had two types growing up...the first had cast iron wheels and I was a bit small and had trouble mowing with it because of the weight I suppose, and the wheels didn't move as smoothly over the grass as the later one my dad got that had rubber tires on lighter steel wheels. I wholeheartedly recommend one with the lighter steel wheels with rubber tires.

Re: Anyone with "reel lawn mower" experience?
To sharpen reel mowers they need to be put in a jig. Don't try and do it yourself or you will likely mess it up. One of the best lawnmowers going is a power reel mower, but I doubt that is what you have in mind.
